Legend has it that one day, during the Arab domination, a Moor caught the eye of a young girl tending her flowers on her balcony and fell madly in love.
The young woman reciprocated his feelings, but when she discovered that the man was already married and would soon be leaving to return to his family, she cut off his head and made a basil pot with it.
The Moor thus remained with her forever, on her balcony, and the plant grew lush, watered by the young woman's tears.
