The name of the coral is a mystery to linguists. Some are convinced that the root is the Greek word koraillon, since it indicates the hard and calcareous skeleton of the animal coral, others instead that it is kura-halos, which means "human form" and refers to the typical conformation with which it occurs, which often remember the shape of a person. According to Ovid, the red coral was born from the blood of Medusa, one of the Gorgons, when Perseus beheaded it. The Gorgons had the ability to petrify the eyes and the blood of Medusa, on contact with the foam of the waves, petrified some algae that turned red with blood.
