Conchinas also known as chalcedony rosette is a Brazilian stone belonging to the quartz family.
Conchiolin (also known as conchina or perlucin) is made up of a set of complex proteins secreted by the external epithelial tissue of molluscs, i.e. the mantle.
These proteins, together with other macromolecules, form a matrix that constitutes the environment in which the aragonite crystals that make up the shell of molluscs nucleate and grow.
The ions necessary for the formation of crystals are also secreted by the mantle, but it is the conformation of the environment at a molecular level that favors the formation of aragonite crystals in place of calcite.
