In the Greek myth Psyche, the most beautiful of the three daughters of a king, it was represented with butterfly wings: the motivation is to be found in the meaning of the word Psyche which, in Greek, means both soul and butterfly. For the ancient Greeks the Psyche was also identified with the soul, in fact, when they wanted to depict a deceased man, they painted it with a butterfly that came out of its mouth to hover in the air. The belief that the soul takes the form of a butterfly is still widespread in Greece. During the medieval period, angels were often depicted as butterflies, while, even nowadays, butterflies are used as a symbol of fairies.
