Legend has it that Alpheus, the river god, fell in love with Arethusa, a nymph of Artemis.
However, she did not reciprocate his love, and to escape his insistence, she invoked the intervention of the goddess Artemis, who enveloped her in a thick cloud and dissolved her in a spring. Sinking beneath the Ionian Sea, Arethusa flowed into Ortygia.
Alpheus, unwilling to give up, entrusted his dream of love to the waves: he traveled underground, transformed into a river by the gods, to resurface next to his beloved spring, in the great harbor.
