Legend has it that Alpheus, river god, fell in love with Arethusa, nymph of Artemis. However, she did not reciprocate this love and to escape Alpheus' insistence, she invoked the intervention of the goddess Artemis who wrapped her in a thick cloud and dissolved her in a spring. Having sunk under the Ionian Sea, Arethusa flowed into Ortigia. Alpheus, not willing to give up, entrusted his dream of love to the waves: he traveled underground, transformed into a river by the gods, to re-emerge next to the beloved source, in the large port.
